Snowdonian Odyssey - preamble

Betsy Who?

Snowdonia a different way.

On a typical trip we'd pick a route and plan a multi-day backpack from one end to the other, possibly with the odd short day.

This time I thought differently. We'd pick a couple of fixed bases from which to attack the surrounding peaks.

Backpacking over Tryfan and the like, frankly, scared me a little.

Tryfan from Gwern Gof Uchaf

Because of limited free time by people in our group we only had 12 days to play with.

As I've said, there were not many ideally placed campsites near shops, restaurants or pubs so it looked like we would need to carry the best part of a week's worth of food! We bought some freeze dried packs to try. David took one look at these and said 'Hey, I could do that!', and he did.

And they tasted better, for a fraction of the price. Concocted just from off-the-shelf dried food!

As an added bonus I'd asked Debbie, the very nice cake cook, if she could bake us another excellent cake.

Two 'bases' were chosen; one in the Ogden valley at Gwern Gof Uchaf and the other at Llyn Gwynant. These should provide decent points from which to attack the three Northern ranges; the Carnedds, Glyders and the classic Snowdon horseshoe. Enough to wear anybody out, but just in case we still had energy I had my eye on Cnight as an option.

That'll never fit...
Steve Ashton's 'The Ridges Of Snowdonia' proved very useful.

So exciting!
