Snowdonia Odyssey - Day one

Bus anyone?

The plan was to take the bus a little way to Swallow Falls and maybe an early lunch.

Well.

When we climbed on board the S2 the driver asked us where to. We said 'Swallow falls, please', trusting he would shout out when we arrived.

Well, then.

Half an hour later, chatting amongst ourselves and not watching where we were, we were surprised to find ourselves outside the Pen Y Pass hostel. When we commented to the driver he offered us a lift back to Capel Curig for free. How nice. He grumbled a bit though when he learned we really wanted Swallow Falls.

Pen Y Pass
To console ourselves, we had elevenses in the 'Malory's bar & restaurant' in the hostel while we waited for our bus.

Finally at Swallow Falls...

'Love locks'

...where we had lunch.

Not that we had enough time for lunch, the S2 was due in 20 minutes!

Our 'friendly' bus driver finally drops us of at Capel Curig outside the legendary climber Joe Brown's shop. Bought a souvenir wire-gate carabina.

No more buses now...

Start of the Ogwen Valley.
Not sunny, but not raining!

A 6 km backpack down the Ogwen Valley....

Sphagnum moss and tormentil, amongst others

...passing the first of many, many, many bemused looking Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) adventurers.

Bemused bunch

Bog asphodel & bell heather

Second lunch

Getting near now! That looks like Tryfan!

As our destination came in sight. Gwern Gof Uchaf campsite.

First taste of homemade backpacking cuisine.
Our homemade food gets a thumbs up. Tasty.

As we travelled the phone signal coverage diminished. A the campsite David had to launch his phone into the stratosphere to send a text.

Phone juggling: Communicating with the outside world

As we drift off to sleep the only downer is the incessant drivel from the surrounding herd of DofE youth well into the night.

Tiger moth in the shower block

I must say, Gwern Gof Uchaf was good value. They supplied free hot showers and a clean toilet on a level, soft pitch, all for £5 each a night. The only downside was the midnight cabaret.
