Coast To Coast 2022

Days one and two

Day one 7.8 km

This adventure starts at Ravenglas. We had walked the official Wainwright route from St Bees some years ago.

We had a quick lunch and left along country lanes towards Stanton Bridge and the Post Office campsite.

Esk Valley Railway

It was the perfect day for walking. Not too hot, slight breeze.

We followed the railway for a while through woods before striking North towards Stanton

Dinner at the Bridge Inn

Day 2

Well, now the fun began.

We'd had a heatwave in London. Here though, had been a different story.
A week of solid rain had the rivers almost bursting their banks.

We were tired after yesterday. 2 years off due to Covid left us out of condition.

Breakfast at Woodland's

So we decided to take the easier, lower of the two possible routes today.

After a leisurely breakfast...

...the journey started pleasant enough, through woods and along hillsides.

However the path along the side of Wastewater was a figment of imagination and turned out to be considerably slower going than we'd expected.

Half way along we spoke to a paddle boarder, asking if he could see any path ahead. 'No!' he replied. I'm sure he was laughing as he paddled away.

We were hoping to make Scafell pike today but that was not on the cards.

Instead, with aching legs we first tried the full NT campsite before pitching near the excellent Wasdale Inn.
