PCW Day Four

FROM Whitegate Farm TO Hebden Bridge - Saturday, 25TH AUGUST

25 miles cycled

Before failing to get away by 9:00,...

...some much need bike maintenance.

These were nearly new at the start
I could not believe the rate we were getting through brake pads. We'd all had issues. Keith with his disks had brake fade.

Sometime yesterday I lost a screw that holds my rack on. When we stopped at Holmfirth for breakfast we found an excellent proper hardware shop with really helpful staff.

A proper shop for proper people
Did you know the collective noun for a group of cyclists is a peleton? It comes from the French for 'outrageously dressed road hazard'. Only joking. They were a really nice bunch.

 Breakfast at Beatties...

...opposite Sid's Café

There was a Netherthong as well, and a Netherbridge half way between them.
Netherwhere, I don't know.
Sorry...

The day slowly brightened...

Wat!?
...and turned into glorious day full of far reaching views in the best of weather..

...and we started to think about lunch.

We hit Barkisland. A nice looking place, cricket on the green and a plethera of pubs.
Aah time travel. Can't beat it.
We asked a trio of locals watching the match where we might get lunch and of course it's mid afternoon again. The only place is a mile off route.

Lunch at Barkisland.

The pub was shear luxury. It was holding a wedding and we enjoyed (well, David didn't) lunch on the veranda watching the creepy uncle play with all the little kids.

As I put my bag down, the one with all me baubles in it, there was a small desperate crunch. I found out later that my camera screen is cracked. Sigh. The poor thing had been rattling around me baubles bag because a sudden monsoon had dowsed its protective case and that needed drying out.

What is this?
At the end of the day we reached Hebden bridge. We didn't have a lot of daylight left so we took a rather direct path to the New Delight Inn, bypassing the notorious 'The Buttress'! Blast. Well that's a good reason to do it all again then...

The direct path was a delightful bridleway...

 ...through a sun dappled valley...

...followed by a short stiff climb.

Tent pitched at 8:00. We were just in time for food.

A veritable oasis.
