Hebden Bridge to Settle - Sunday, 26th August
A staggering 43 miles cycled!
Rain all day today. After failing to get away by 9:00, we breakfasted at May's Shop.
An amazing place that sold everything.
Apart from meths. But everything else.
After pies and tea for breakfast we took the opportunity to stock up on lunch and more.
As it turned out, we found this route very enjoyable. Although 10 miles longer the fast roads and canals, at least as far a Colne, were a welcome day off.
Indeed after the initial climb passed Blackshaw Head the Long Causeway proved to be a perfect roller-coaster. The most stimulating high speed, adrenaline fuelled 7 miles of the trip!
At Colne the 'day off' was temporarily suspended until Foulridge and another old railway, but at Giggleswick, it died completely.
We planned to have our usual mid-afternoon lunch at Gargrave, but despite signs to the contrary, we found it mostly shut. Must be something to do with the bank holiday.
If only... |
Gargrave: A whole row of cafes, restaurants and the like shut... |
By way of karmic compensation (is that a thing?) we found 'Kannika's All You Can Eat Thai Buffet' open! We filled our stomachs as our sodden clothes dripped and flooded the floor. We didn't want to leave.
...apart from here. |
At last the rain eased. As dusk fell we gratefully pitched our tents at Lancliffe Caravan park. A large and busy place with the all important showers and a launderette to dry our clothes. The friendly warden even gave us a free cup of soap to wash our clothes.
A late dinner was a tired, damp affair watching the washing go round.
And relax.......
43 miles. If we keep this up we may actually make our train!
Summary despatch:
"Long day today.
Covered 40 miles to Settle.
Weather atrocious but morale high.
Young David's use of satnav meant less errors and less wrong turnings.
Enabled us to do the high mileage.
No casualties.
Send money."
